Biomass FuelsBiomass Fuels are organic materials made from plants and animals. These include wood, crops, manure, and some refuse. These renewable energy sources can be found around the world and are most commonly used to power vehicles, heat homes, and to produce cooking fuels. As the world’s energy demand increases it is vital that we develop cost effective technologies to take advantage of these emerging fuel sources to offset the increasing cost and inefficiencies of traditional energy production. The Cooling, Heating and Power Technologies Program Team at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is working with biomass fuels in Combined Heat and Power (CHP) production. This process uses biomass fuels in the production of electricity and usable heat through a single, highly efficient process. From initial fuel and equipment testing and analysis to end use system integration, ORNL’s CHP team is working to develop cost-effective alternatives for energy needs.
