CHP System

Facilities that have made the switch to a CHP system (Combined Heat and Power) are on the forefront of an effort to bring more efficient, lower cost energy to the masses. These systems use a fuel such as biomass or natural gas to produce usable heat and electricity simultaneously. The electricity can be used for any typical power consuming application and the heat can be converted for water and/or space heating of buildings or facilities.

ORNL’s Cooling, Heating and Power Technologies Program Team is a leader in the testing and development of CHP systems. We work with industry, academia, national labs, and the federal government to develop cost-effective technologies that increase energy efficiency, reduce peak power demand, ensure better power reliability and quality, and reduce emissions. Our work in CHP system development has helped produce some of the most efficient, cost effective equipment available today.
