Cogeneration Technology

ORNL’s Cooling, Heating and Power Technologies Program Team is a leader in the testing and development of cogeneration technology. Cogeneration (or combined heat and power, CHP) is the process of creating both consumable power and usable heat simultaneously from a single fuel source.

Businesses, universities and military installations across the U.S. and Canada have used cogeneration technology and have seen 50 to 70 percent higher efficiency rates. In many cases, biomass or methane gas from landfills is used as the primary fuel source. For larger installations natural gas is typically preferred.
