Cogeneration

Cogeneration, also known as Combined Heat and Power (CHP), is an efficient approach to generating power and usable thermal energy through a single process, using a single fuel source. This allows a facility to generate electrical or mechanical power to run normal operations and heat for space conditioning, dehumidification, or water heating purposes. Cogeneration processes reduce the emission of greenhouse gasses while increasing a facility’s overall operational efficiency.

Within ORNL’s Cooling, Heating and Power Technologies Program team, we work to demonstrate the benefits of integrated cogeneration systems in commercial building applications. We work with industry, academia, national labs, and the federal government to develop cost-effective technologies that increase energy efficiency, reduce peak power demand, ensure better power reliability and quality, and reduce emissions.
