Combined Heat and Power

Combined Heat and Power, also known as CHP or Cogeneration, is the process of generating electricity and usable thermal energy through a single, integrated system. This is possible because the combined heat and power process captures the exhaust heat that would typically be rejected in a traditional energy generation system. This heat can be used for space heating, cooling, or water heating.

ORNL’s Cooling, Heating and Power Technologies Program team works to demonstrate the benefits of integrated combined heat and power systems in commercial building applications. We identify and help resolve problems that occur when combining different components into an integrated system. Our team works to develop and implement system improvements, and provide educational opportunities for professionals working in the CHP industry.
