Integrated Energy Systems

Integrated Energy Systems (IES) are on-site power generation systems that incorporate multiple technologies for providing energy to a single building or a network of buildings. IES is known by several industry names including Cogeneration, CHP (Cooling, Heating and Power), CHPB (Cooling, Heating and Power for Buildings), and CCHP (Combined Cooling, Heating and Power). These systems are able to achieve high energy efficiencies through the conversion of exhaust or waste heat from power generation. The heat is converted into other energy services like the heating and cooling of buildings.

ORNL’s IES team investigates emerging technologies and characterizes the market potential, energy use, economics, and environmental benefits of each. We work with industry teams to develop packaged or modular units that combine these technologies into a single system for end-use applications. In addition, we research and develop the system controls that manage complex install scenarios to keep multiple systems running smoothly to simultaneously maximize efficiency, minimize cost, support the grid, and provide key emergency back-up for critical electrical and thermal loads.

ORNL’s CHP division is a leader in the research and development of Integrated Energy Systems. For more information please contact us.
